People come to a psychiatry website on some of their harder days. It should not also be a website that fights them. We want this one to work for everybody, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, magnification, or a phone in bright sunlight.

The standard we work to

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That is the benchmark referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act and by California's Unruh Civil Rights Act, and it is the one we test against.

What we have done

• Text and background colours are checked against the 4.5:1 minimum, including the crisis resources, which we hold to a higher bar than the guidelines require.
• Every page can be navigated by keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator and a skip link to jump past the navigation.
• Images carry meaningful alternative text.
• Headings follow a real hierarchy so screen reader users can move through a page by structure.
• The self-assessment questionnaires use native form controls, and each question's answers are grouped and labelled so a screen reader announces the question, not just the options.
• Assessment results are announced to assistive technology when they appear.
• Animation is reduced automatically for anyone whose device requests it, and no video plays sound on its own.
• The site is tested with automated tools at desktop and mobile widths, and pages currently return no WCAG 2.1 AA violations.

Where we know we fall short

Automated testing catches perhaps half of what matters. We have not yet completed a full manual audit with assistive technology users, and some parts of the site are supplied by third parties — the appointment booking tool and the embedded map among them — whose accessibility we influence but do not control. If one of those blocks you from something, contact us and we will get you there another way, by phone if that is easiest.

Tell us about a barrier

If you hit something on this site you cannot use, we want to know. You do not need to describe it in technical terms — telling us which page and what you were trying to do is plenty. We will acknowledge your message within five business days and tell you what we can do and when.

If you would rather not use the website at all, call the office. We will book your appointment, answer your questions and send you anything you need in another format.
